Christian, Islamic, and Jewish Dispute Resolution in the NY/Metropolitan Area

AMAL is pleased to be partnering up with the New York County Lawyers Association – along with its religious and faith based partners in the Jewish and Christian communities -- to co-host an event on the need for faith based alternative dispute resolution in service to our respective communities.  We hope that everyone can share this night of inter-faith legal dialogue with us, as we look to catch up with our Christian and Jewish brethren in this very important initiative, one that seeks to find alternative ways (meaning, alternative to courts of law) to resolve differences.Space is limited, so please reserve your spots.  Also, CLE credit is being offered, and AMAL members can benefit from half price tickets for admission ($25 instead of $50).  Please see this link for details.Tuesday, February 4, 2020 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm 14 Vesey Street, New York, New York New York County Lawyers Association

Afaf Nasher Joins AMAL’s Board!

AMAL is pleased to announce that Afaf Nasher has joined AMAL as its newest Board Member and Officer. We welcome her to the AMAL family. Bringing on an experienced and proven leader in our NYC Muslim Community, such as Ms. Nasher, has been an important goal of AMAL, and helps us to better counsel, and in other ways assist and meet the needs of, our brothers and sisters in the Tristate Area.

Ms. Nasher currently serves as the Executive Director for the New York Chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, “CAIR-NY,” a civil rights and social justice advocacy nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering the Muslim community. Prior to shifting her focus to civil rights, she was an associate for the Law Firm of Rossi and Crowley, LLP, performing work in commercial litigation.

Ms. Nasher often lectures on Islamophobia and civil rights abuses targeting the Muslim community. She has been frequently interviewed and quoted on national and international media such as CNBC, BBC World Service, NPR, The New York Times, The Huff Post, and Al-Jazeerah.

Ms. Nasher obtained her Juris Doctor from St. John’s University School of Law, and was awarded the school's 2019 Public Service Award. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice.

We are thrilled to have Ms. Nasher join us to help strengthen our capacity to serve and counsel the community. Please join us in welcoming Ms. Nasher to AMAL.

2019 Gala Recap

On January 31st, AMAL and approximately 160 of our friends and supporters, came together to commemorate AMAL’s accomplishments, and to discuss the relevant topic of “Checks & Balances: Legal Safeguard Against Abuse of Power” with Preet Bharara. By all accounts, the event was a success. Congratulations to our Awardees: Celgene Corp. (Medical Innovation), Khurram Wahid (Community Service), and Nihad Awad (Lifetime Achievement). Thanks to our Guest Speaker Preet Bharara, Master of Ceremonies Afaf Nashar, and guest host/moderator Dean Obeidallah – all great work. And a special thanks to everyone who came out and celebrated with us despite the frigid temperatures.

In Memory Of The Honorable Sheila E. Abdus-Salaam

Judge Abdus-Salam was the first in many categories—most notably the first African American female, and first Muslim, Judge to sit on New York State’s highest court. Read More...
